Browsing and researching for assignment 5.

I have spent a good while searching the internet regarding William Gilpin and the local area. The book is a really good read, especially with part of it being my local area, I can relate to the places he is mentioning and visualise as he goes along. Obviously, the sense of time is present and would be completely different today but I am interested to see how different and how the difference in the ages affects the images that I can capture as opposed to the scenes that Gilpin captured.
I've come across a couple of people who have done a similar project to my 'Exploring home' series, retracing the steps of Gilpin during his Wye tour.

Photographer Darryl Baird takes an extensive look into the route that Gilpin undertook and through a camera, a 'Claude Glass' and an online blog, documented his travels very well. Baird makes direct comparisons between the time frames and even tries to recreate come of the shots, as I would like to do. I was particularly interested to see that even he had some trouble with views ad good shots due to the towns having been built up around these remarkable ruins, a problem that I am aware may cause some trouble at the time of shooting my images.

Another website I came across was that of Photographer Steve Keiretsu. He also undertook a Wye tour with relation to the work of William Gilpin and also documented his journey through Photographs and blog posts. HIs part three focuses on the Abbeys and castle ruins although his travels aren't as extensive as that of Baird and he, like me, only visits a couple of monuments mentioned by Gilpin. Keiretsu has an in depth look at each monument that he visits, complete with multiple photos.

Thinking about my own project, I have a number of concerns. I have a good depiction of these monuments from Gilpin's writing and sketches and I guess that I am worried as to how to photograph them. Do I focus on a wider area of just the ruin itself? Do I try to recreate Gilpin's sketches in the photograph? Will I be able to get the images I'm imagining? The extra ruins that I am including are ones that I know, only one of which I haven't visited before but pass regularly and have always wanted to see. It's important for me to not only show these places for the beautiful places that they are but also to remember what I have learned about landscape photography during this course and apply it to the project.

As a last mention, I came across this website last night, http://www.gutenberg.org/files/36643/36643-h/36643-h.htm which is a transcript of a book by J.T.Barber 'A Tour throughout South Wales and Monmouthshire' (London 1803). In a very similar style to that of Gilpin, Barber makes a journey more South Wales based and includes a lot of the extra ruins and monuments that I have included along Gilpin's route. As with Gilpin's work, it is a very interesting read and I am thrilled to have some comparison to work with for those extra ruins from a similar time frame.
