Exercise 3.4: A persuasive image

I managed to have a quick look through a few papers and magazines I had to hand for this exercise.
Firstly, I came across a charity campaign for a walking challenge. The locations for the challenge range from Ben Nevis to Dartmoor and therefore the image is a man, geared up for the trek, stood infront of a mountain. Obviously not an advertising feature as such but an idealistic view of a sunny/dry day with the mountain there ready to be conquered. All ready for a nice day of walking. "Discover the great british outdoors' makes it seem almost touristy yet the bold word 'Challenge' with the views of the mountain implies it's not going to be easy.

Next we have an advert for half price bikes. The picture shows a beautiful sunny day, plenty of sunshine, a mysterious bike path which leads to who knows where. The test 'Feel the wind in your leg hair' gives us, the viewer, the ability to imagine being in the image, on a bike, in shorts. It actually draws the viewer into the scene. The images is very persuasive. So i guess the advert as a whole is very persuasive.

The third example I have found is a car advert, with a Brazilian football and a picturesque beach scene in the background. The advert is largely connecting the new car with new features, with that of Brazil or more closely, Brazilian football,  to do with the world cup being held there but as I'm not a football fan myself, I don't fully understand the connection. The scene may be somewhere in Brazil or maybe just giving the impression of somewhere more exotic but I cant be sure so the landscape may or may not be another connection to the country. I don't really understand the connection between the car and the scene so i wouldn't class this as a successful advert with regards to the picture connecting with the subject.

In a local magazine, I've also come across a small article to advertise a local gym. The main image is a woman running across a beautiful quiet beach. This appeals to me and probably a lot of other people, even though there are no direct images or the gym itself. The idea os having a beach body, running spritely across a sun-kissed, peaceful beach is something I would love to do, so this image just personifies it and give you the power to image that if you go to this gym, that could be you. A very successful use of landscape image.

A major factor amongst the country at the moment is the economy. We have all felt the pinch in one way or another and it's never been more visually apparent to me than walking through our town centre recently.
About 10-15years ago our town centre was a bustling hub both during the daytime and the evening. There were numerous shops and cafes, a full indoor market with fruit and veg stalls and local family butchers. All daily needs could be accommodated with travel agents, high street shops and banks and the evenings came alive with an array of pubs and clubs.
Over the years pubs and shops have closed, some have relocated and have left behind a very little but a memory of what the town once was. Designer shopping outlets and big name supermarket have been built on the outskirts of the town and with people wanting more for less during these hard financial times, these quaint little town centre have fallen victim to the crisis.
Waling down the high street now I can hardly recognise the place. Pound shops a plenty, alongside phone shops and fast food outlets and more than a few empty shop fronts and boarded up public houses.

The image in my head to create would be a split image and I visualise it as follows;

Scanned in sketch from my OCA notebook

The one half would be a black and white image, B&W representing the past, of half the high street, full of people and plenty of shops open. The other half would be in colour, representing the present day, of the other half of the high street,with boarded up shops and no people out and about.

After thought: I was eager to see if i could actually create that image. I know the town is not as busy as it once was so i tried different times of day to create the busy and quiet times in the image.

Obviously not a true depiction but a likeness to what I was visualising.
