Exercise 1.1: Preconceptions

I am no artist, as you can see, but the above pic is my initial take on a typical landscape picture.
Natural beauty, trees, mountains, waterfalls or a river, all in a serene setting with no noise, no people and no interruptions.
I can imagine the luscious green tones and the sun made shading created at this time of year (autumn), with the orangey glow of a low sun if taken in the evening.

  • What shape is the picture?
Landscape obviously, drawing on a wide angle to take in as much of the scene as possible, keeping the horizon to a mid point.

  • What sort of terrain is depicted?
A peaceful and serene countryside with trees, hills and a water inclusion, such as a waterfall or river.

  • Whats in it?
No people at all keeping the remote peaceful setting as it is and undisturbed.

  • How are the subjects arranged?
The main focus points are to the front of the frame, slightly to the centre.

  • How would you describe the mood of the picture?
I would describe the mood as peaceful, relaxing and quiet.

I guess my preconception of this genre has come from magazines or possible from framed artwork that I have seen throughout many venues over the course of my lifetime so far. My family is from Cumbria in the Lake District and so picturesque images of the area have been scattered about family houses. I think that we see landscapes as a contrast to our everyday urban lives. Landscape, as I am sure this course will show, covers a wide range and can be anything from a picture perfect country scene or an urban city centre. I think that your subconscious takes over and the landscape preconception of serenity and peaceful countryside is a complete contrast to the everyday busy and bustling urban scene that the majority of us are involved in daily.

I am hoping that the course gives me more of a varied view on the landscape genre and allows me to embrace and discover more of the hidden beauty within our everyday landscape.
